Kroonstad - Fezile Dabi - Free State - South Africa

The pleasant town of Kroonstad is situated alongside the north-south N1 highway only 2hrs south of Johannesburg.

kroonstad_-_dutch_reformed_church.jpgKroonstad is the 3rd largest town in the Free State Province and is the agricultural, educational and administrative center for this area with modern shops, a theatre complex, the Sarel Celliers Museum and a number of beautiful and historical buildings including the Town Hall, the Old Market Building, the Post Office Building, the Standard Bank Building and the old Dutch Reformed Church.

There are various farms offering overnight accommodation – either self-catering or with farmhouse fare. Hikers are well catered for with the Renosterkop Trail and the Buffelskloof Trail.

kroonstad_-_sarel_cilliers.jpgThe town of Kroonstad was established in 1854 and is thought to have been named after a horse. Folklore has it that a Voortrekker, Sarel Cilliers, owned a horse named Kroon (Crown) who drowned in the Vals River.

 

kroonstad_-_bridge.jpgThat portion of the river became known as Kroonspruit after this misfortune and the name stuck when this site was chosen for a new settlement. It served briefly as the Boer capital of the Orange Free State (March 13–May 11, 1900) after the fall of Bloemfontein during the South African War (1899–1902).

 

kroonstad_-_lucern_bales.jpgKroonstad is a busy agricultural & transportation center with marshaling yards, grain elevators, & engineering works. It is the northern educational focus of the province, with vocational & trade schools. It is within 64 km of the Free State goldfields & there are coal & diamond mines to the north.

 

kroonstad_-_gold.jpgThe Sarel Cilliers Museum on the first floor of the Public Library, contains portraits & documents relating to the Cilliers family. There are also exhibitions on the gold mining industry & the development of the Free State railways.

 

kroonstad_-_flea_market.jpgAs well as being rich in historical sights, there are also modern shopping complexes, cinemas, good restaurants & the Kroonstad Civic Theatre, which always has something interesting on show. If you are in town in September be sure not to miss the September Street Festival, while the monthly Flea Market provides bargain shopping & great entertainment.

There is a lot going on in Kroonstad to keep the family busy, but it is the impressive Kroonpark Resort that remains the major attraction.
