Vredefort Dome at Vredefort

Vredefort Dome is a representative part of a larger meteorite impact structure, or astrobleme and has been declared South Africa’s seventh World Heritage Site. Dating back 2,023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme found on earth so far. With a radius of 190km, it is also the largest and the most deeply eroded. Vredefort Dome bears witness to the world’s greatest known single energy release event, which caused devastating global change, including, according to some scientists, major evolutionary changes. It provides critical evidence of the earth’s geological history and is crucial to our understanding of the evolution of the planet. The Vredefort structure is currently regarded the biggest and oldest clearly visible impact structure on Earth.

Being housed in an old Jewish Synagogue, it tells the story of the important Jewish influence on the history of the town. The museum is well kept in terms of heraldic criteria and well worth a visit. Golf Island in Parys

The island is situated on the eastern side of Parys and is connected to the town by the suspension bridge and a causeway a little further up-stream. The island is the biggest of the islands belonging to Ngwathe Municipality (approx. 68 hectares). Parys Drift, or Doppies Drift, as it is sometimes called, crosses to the island. This is the drift which was used by transport riders and the Liebenberg Trek probably went through this drift on the way to the famous hill called Liebenbergkoppie. The island currently houses an 18 hole golf course and club house.
